MODEL BUILDING TIPS

This model will require more than one sitting to build it. We advise to pause between different stages as you work, especially when you come to gluing. The white glue softens the paper and it may lead to misshapen parts if you do not allow them to dry well before proceeding further with assembling. Click here to watch our paper model building tips.

ABOUT THIS LANDMARK

The Pont du Gard, an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge located in the south of France near the town of Nîmes, is a remarkable feat of engineering and one of the best-preserved examples of Roman aqueduct technology. Constructed in the first century AD, it was built as part of a nearly 50 km (31 mile) long aqueduct system that carried water from a spring in Uzès to the Roman colony of Nemausus, now Nîmes.

This grand structure, standing 48.8 meters (160 feet) high, is renowned for its three-tiered arrangement of arches: the lower level consists of 6 arches, the middle level has 11, and the upper level 47, combining for a total length of 275 meters (902 feet). Notably, the Pont du Gard was built entirely without the use of mortar; its stones, some weighing up to 6 tons, were precisely cut and wedged together.

The aqueduct was a technical masterpiece of its time, illustrating the Roman skill in hydraulics and civil engineering. It was designed to ensure a steady supply of water, using a slight gradient within its conduits to maintain the flow. Over the centuries, the Pont du Gard continued to serve as a bridge and became a tollgate in the Middle Ages.

Today, the Pont du Gard is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of France's most popular tourist attractions. It stands as a testament to Roman architectural and engineering prowess, offering visitors a striking insight into the ancient world. The site also includes a museum that details its history and the engineering techniques used in its construction.
